Nigella Fish Pie is a comforting and indulgent family dish that combines a rich filling with a creamy mash topping.

Ingredients

  • 500g white fish, such as cod or haddock
  • 250g smoked fish, such as haddock or salmon
  • 500ml milk
  • 50g butter
  • 50g plain flour
  • 200g frozen peas
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 lemon, zest and juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 650g mashed potatoes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. In a saucepan, heat the milk and add the white fish, poaching gently until cooked.
  3. Remove the fish and set aside, reserving the milk.
  4. In the same pan, melt the butter and add the onion, cooking until softened.
  5. Stir in the flour and cook for a minute before gradually whisking in the reserved milk.
  6. Bring to a simmer until thickened, then stir in the peas, smoked fish, zest, juice, and dill.
  7. Flake the cooked fish back in and pour the mixture into a pie dish.
  8. Top with the mashed potatoes and smooth over.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbling.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of white wine to the filling.
  • Top with grated cheese before baking for a cheesy crust.
